Explore the Surroundings

The Signal Box is a peaceful base for exploring Whanganui and the beautiful lower reaches of the Whanganui River. Set beside the awa and surrounded by countryside, you can slow down here while still being within easy reach of the city and some of the region’s best walks, cycle trails, galleries and river experiences.

One of our favourite local walks is right on the doorstep. Follow the road along the river and cross the impressive Upokongaro Cycle and Walking Bridge into the small riverside village of Upokongaro. The 130-metre bridge connects Papaiti and Upokongaro and forms part of the Mountains to Sea – Ngā Ara Tūhono trail. Once across the bridge, stop for a coffee or something to eat before wandering back along the river.

For cyclists and walkers, The Signal Box is ideally placed near the final section of the Mountains to Sea Trail, which follows the Whanganui River from Upokongaro through the city and onwards to the Tasman Sea. The trail passes riverside paths, sculptures, galleries and cafés, making it easy to turn a walk or bike ride into a full day of exploring.

A short trip into central Whanganui brings you to a wonderful mix of galleries, heritage buildings, cafés and riverside attractions, including the newly redeveloped Te Whare o Rehua Sarjeant Gallery and its impressive new exhibition spaces.

There is plenty more to discover — the Whanganui River, historic riverboats, local cafés, the Saturday Riverside Market, gardens, beaches, walking tracks and the creative arts scene that makes Whanganui such an interesting place to visit.

Whether you're arriving by canoe, cycling the Mountains to Sea Trail, walking Te Araroa or simply looking for a quiet weekend away, The Signal Box makes a wonderful base for discovering Whanganui and its surrounding area.
