The Aramoho South Signal Box opened on 27 March 1911 and remained in service until November 1986. After 75 years of railway service, the Signal Box was carefully relocated to its current home in Papaiti, where it has been given a new life overlooking the Whanganui River.

Many of the remarkable historical photographs featured here were sourced from rail historian John Fitzgerald’s book, New Zealand Railways Stand Alone Mechanical Signal Boxes of the H J Wynne Era, 1900–1929 (ISBN 978-0-908573-79-0).

 

We are incredibly grateful to John for his dedication to researching and preserving these records of New Zealand’s railway history. His work allows us to glimpse a fascinating bygone era and appreciate the people, places and technology that shaped our railway story.
